The threads of empowerment

The universe speaks in mathematics, and faith comes alive when we learn to act with it

Hello Beautiful People! I’m back. A couple of days late—but if you knew where I was, you’d forgive me. Let’s just say I’m happy, grateful, and maybe not ready to kiss and tell. A lot is moving in my world right now, and I’m thankful you’re here with me for it.

Arizona held me most of last week. Ceremony every day, until the rain came. Not just a drizzle—the kind of desert storm that turns everything into a flash flood. My tent filled up with water and, once the sun returned, I laid everything out on the ground like a little yard sale of my life.

That week taught me a great deal, but today I’m sitting with a renewed sense of empowerment and looking at the threads of my life.

Faith without works is delusion

I’ve discussed before how spiritual work needs to be the kind of stuff that fosters maturity. That matures us, that moves us into a place where we can handle more and do more. I stand by that more strongly than ever. Spiritual work needs to get you results, and if it doesn’t, it’s not worth your time. If it doesn’t improve your life, improve your state of being in the world, improve your relationships, or your MONEY (because money is energy), it’s taking from you. And where something takes more than it gives, well, I sure don’t want that in my life.

Faith without works is delusion. Faith with works is like the merging of the spiritual and the scientific. The body is the what. Spirituality is the why, science is the how. You need all three to make stuff happen. And living is about doing. It’s about action. Why would we take this body to just stay passive? To not move? to not make? Stepping into the role of creator, not just creation, is the mark of maturity, empowerment, and responsibility.

I’m thinking about my own work over the last week. I sat on the top of a mesa for a night. Communing with Great Spirit about the things I need to work on. The dark shadows still in my mirrors. I was humbled and grateful. Great Spirit gave me plenty of homework. Sometimes it feels like I’m in Hogwarts and I’m not very good at spells, but I sure am learning.

I’m learning that there are what feels like magic formulas in the world to make stuff happen. To make change within yourself. To bring that change out into the world. To move from turning an intention into an action and having that action ripple something out into the web of life.

When I first started working, I was in Change Management. I knew, although young at the time, that learning how to make change happen for myself and others, would be one of the greatest skills to have. We need a lot of change in the world. Change Management was teaching us how to make change on an enterprise level. Political Science taught me how it might look systemically. Art taught me how to see it before it even came together. Spirituality is teaching me how to do it internally to improve my state of being. How to transform myself, my thinking, and my love.

Empowerment as the thread

For me, a lot of the process of self-transformation has been about empowerment. This was the theme over the last week for me. When you heal the inner child, you step into the adult. The adult makes shit happen. I can do more than I know. I can trust my intuition. I can have a big dream and have no idea how it’s going to come together, but I don’t need to. You just get started. I can have anything I desire when I just do the work. And when I keep that child’s fire burning. Burning bright with hope.

I’m aware of how empowerment is like the theme of the last century too. Women’s empowerment. Minority empowerment. Community empowerment. Statehood. The Land Back Movement. Me too. All of the world has been moving, in my opinion, culturally, into places of empowerment (and for good reason).

Empowerment is the mature place of being. Where sovereignty lives and consciousness is exercised. It’s why it makes so much sense that we’ve collectively moved out of religion (as we knew it), rule systems, institutions (as best as we could), making efforts away from systemic violence, racism, sexism, and more. Be the change you want to see in the world. We want to get out from under the bully’s foot, for ourselves, and then we want that for the collective.

It was why I went into crypto (stay with me here). The promise in 2017-ish was a sovereign financial system. I was working at a GSE that had been in conservatorship for 10+ years. Who had basically collapsed the economy (much more complicated than this, though). The promise of crypto was fascinating compared to the major financial institutions that we’re essentially governing the financial system today.

Crypto was new access to capital. Was currency unregulated by governments and supposedly unaffected by the woes of a global financial system that we learned we couldn’t trust. The traumas around money are probably one of the greatest generational traumas there are. We still remember the Great Depression, the inflated currencies by corrupt governments, Communism that stripped people of wealth, and where families literally burned money to stay warm because it was worth more than it would be if they spent it. Crypto wanted to be the potential for a sovereign money system that would never see something like that happen again.

At its core, money is supposed to flow easily, with as little friction as possible, meeting needs where value wants to be exchanged. Anything that blocks that flow—middlemen, transaction fees, unnecessary controls—breaks the system. In its best dream, crypto wanted to restore money to what it should be: energy moving freely.

But crypto fell short. It lacked leadership, direction, maturity. Faith without works. A dream without embodiment. Still, I don’t think the story is over. A lot of people in the spiritual community say crypto is a technology ahead of its time. Maybe it’s like we’ve been handed a spellbook we don’t quite know how to use yet.

I realize I could be telling you about the man I’m falling for (so exciting) or grouse hunting (more on that tomorrow), but today I keep circling back to the meeting place of empowerment. Where inner power becomes a dance of spirituality and science. Ceremony and mathematics. Magic and method. Where we don’t put our faith in something and lay back, but instead cultivate our own inner creator to cast the future.

The universe speaks in the language of mathematics, and it looks like magic because it is. When we finally learn how to use that language—not from shadowy, selfish desires, but from love—what becomes possible?

Faith with works is transformation. It’s empowerment. It’s sovereignty. Whether I’m sitting on a mesa, practicing change management, or exploring crypto, the thread is the same: faith becomes real when it empowers us to act, to create, to embody the future we long for.

That’s where faith stops being delusion and starts becoming creation. That’s where spirituality becomes the key to the lock of the future we’re calling in. Bringing the magic of hope, will, skill, and ability to make truly anything happen.
